Meet Lewis, one of our students who has spent his summer doing something pretty amazing. He built portable suitcase model railways, inspired by the Ffestiniog–Porthmadog Steam Railway in Wales. Using old suitcases lying around, he created baseboards, soldered all the wiring, laid down real railway tracks, added scenery, and hooked everything up to mains electricity. The best part? It all folds down into a suitcase — making a beautiful bit of techy art you can take anywhere.
Lewis isn’t stopping there though. His next project is a mountain-range model based on a military railway in Wales. He’s building up the land using chicken wire, plaster, paper-mâché — creating realistic terrain and detail. It’s great to see such creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on skill.
Well done, Lewis! We can’t wait to see where your next designs take you.
