Each half term, our school celebrates a series of carefully planned themed weeks designed to broaden pupils’ understanding of the world, deepen their personal development, and enrich learning across the curriculum.
These themes link directly to our SMSC curriculum (Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural development), help us actively promote British Values, and strengthen pupils’ personal development, including cultural capital, community awareness, creativity, resilience and understanding of diversity.

Through a mixture of class activities, workshops, external visitors, cross‑curricular links and educational trips, pupils explore important global events, celebrations and topics that help them grow into curious, informed and respectful young people.

We aim to mark each theme during the week it falls; however, events are provisionally planned and may adapt due to PE timetables, subject commitments, staffing, enrichment activities and wider school events. Where needed, celebrations may be moved to ensure pupils can take part meaningfully.

Even if dates shift slightly, all themes will be celebrated in school as part of our commitment to delivering a rich, varied and values‑led curriculum.

We are proud to offer an engaging and varied programme that helps pupils make meaningful connections between their learning and the wider world. By celebrating these themes together, we promote respect, inclusivity and curiosity — all key elements of the well‑rounded education we strive to provide.

Mill House School Themed Weeks – Autumn 1 Term 2026–2027

As we begin a new academic year at Mill House School, our Autumn 1 themed weeks will provide pupils with exciting opportunities to explore important values, develop their understanding of the wider world and strengthen key personal, social and life skills. Through assemblies, lessons, tutor activities and special events, pupils will engage with themes that encourage respect, responsibility, aspiration and community spirit.

Belonging & Community

British Value: Mutual Respect

We begin the year by focusing on what it means to belong. Pupils will explore the importance of community, friendship and positive relationships within school and beyond. Through discussions and collaborative activities, they will reflect on how every individual contributes to making Mill House a welcoming and supportive place. Follow-up activities will encourage pupils to consider their own role in building an inclusive community where everyone feels valued and respected.

Emergency Services & Responsibility

British Value: Rule of Law
SMSC Focus: Moral

Pupils will discover the vital roles played by emergency service personnel and the responsibilities that come with keeping communities safe. They will learn about the police, fire service, ambulance service and other key responders, while exploring concepts such as responsibility, decision-making and keeping themselves and others safe. Activities will help pupils understand the importance of rules, laws and personal accountability in everyday life.

Peace & Anti-Bullying

British Values: Respect and Tolerance

Creating a culture of kindness and respect is at the heart of this themed week. Pupils will examine the impact of bullying and conflict whilst learning strategies to promote peace, empathy and positive communication. Through discussion, reflection and practical activities, they will develop a deeper understanding of how their actions affect others and how they can contribute to a safe and supportive environment for all members of the school community.

Aspirations & Space (STEM)

SMSC Focus: Spiritual

This inspiring STEM-themed week invites pupils to look beyond the world around them and consider the possibilities that the future holds. Using space exploration as a starting point, pupils will explore themes of curiosity, discovery and ambition. They will learn about significant achievements in science and technology while reflecting on their own aspirations, dreams and potential. The theme encourages pupils to think big, set goals and believe in what they can achieve.

Literacy & Poetry Week

SMSC Focus: Cultural
Led by: Katy

Literacy & Poetry Week celebrates the power of language, creativity and self-expression. Pupils will engage with a range of poems, stories and literary activities designed to inspire imagination and confidence in communication. They will have opportunities to read, listen, write and perform, exploring how literature helps us understand ourselves, others and the diverse world around us. The event aims to foster a lifelong appreciation of reading and creative expression.

Diwali – Festival of Light

Pupils will learn about Diwali, one of the most widely celebrated festivals in Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism. They will explore the traditions, symbols and meanings associated with the Festival of Light. The week provides an opportunity to celebrate diversity, promote understanding of different cultures and faiths, and encourage respect for the beliefs and traditions of others.

Community & Celebrations

SMSC Focus: Social
Led by: Paige & Michelle

This themed week focuses on celebrating the many communities and achievements that bring people together. Pupils will explore how festivals, traditions and shared experiences help strengthen connections between individuals and groups. The week encourages reflection on personal successes, teamwork and the importance of recognising achievements both within school and in the wider community.

Looking Ahead

These themed weeks form an important part of Mill House School’s wider curriculum, helping pupils develop academically, socially, morally and culturally. By exploring real-world topics and engaging with key British Values and SMSC themes, pupils will be supported in becoming confident, respectful and responsible members of society as they embark on another exciting year of learning.
