Community Engagement
Mill House School & Bablake Residential Home: Building Bridges Across Generations
At Mill House School, we believe that education extends beyond the classroom. True learning comes from experience, connection, and understanding—and that’s why we are thrilled to announce our new Community Engagement Partnership with Bablake Residential Home.
This initiative is designed to foster meaningful relationships between our students and the elderly residents at Bablake, creating a unique, intergenerational experience that enriches lives on both sides. Each week, our students will visit the home as Social Companions, engaging in conversation, sharing stories, and supporting staff during tea time.
But this is more than just a weekly visit. It’s about building friendships, combating loneliness, and promoting a sense of belonging—for both young people and the elderly.
Together, they will take part in a variety of activities, including:
Enriching Activities for Connection & Wellbeing
- Watercolour Painting – Encouraging creativity and self-expression through art.
- Knitting & Crafting – Learning from one another and developing patience and skill.
- Board Games & Puzzles – Stimulating minds with friendly competition and teamwork.
- Reading & Storytelling – Sharing books, poems, and personal life stories.
- Tea-Time Conversations – Providing companionship and social interaction.
Why This Matters
Loneliness among the elderly is a growing issue, and small acts of kindness can make an enormous difference. Our students will provide not just company, but joy, laughter, and fresh energy to Bablake’s residents. In return, our young people will gain valuable life lessons, including empathy, patience, and a deeper appreciation for different generations and their experiences.
For students, this is an opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone, develop social skills, and understand the importance of giving back. For residents, it’s a chance to relive fond memories, share their wisdom, and feel a renewed sense of connection with the world around them.
A Community United
At Mill House School, we are committed to creating a culture of kindness, respect, and active citizenship. This partnership is just one example of how we empower our students to make a positive impact on the world. By bringing generations together, we are strengthening the fabric of our community and ensuring that no one feels forgotten.
We are excited to see this project grow, and we welcome the support of our wider school community. Whether through volunteering, donating resources, or simply spreading the word, we invite you to join us in making a difference.
Together, we can make Mill House School not just a place of learning, but a force for good in our community.
