You’re Not Alone
Everyone worries sometimes. You might feel upset, confused, worried, pressured by someone, or uncomfortable about something that has happened. When this happens, it is important to remember that you do not have to deal with it on your own.
Talking to a trusted adult can help.
What Is a Trusted Adult?
A trusted adult is someone over the age of 18 who helps you feel safe, listened to and supported.
A trusted adult:
- Listens to what you have to say.
- Takes your worries seriously.
Respects your feelings and personal boundaries. - Helps keep you safe.
- Does not ask you to keep unsafe secrets.
- Will help you get support if you need it.
- Is someone you can talk to again in the future.
Remember, trusted adults may not always have all the answers, but they will try their best to help.
Who Could Be a Trusted Adult?
A trusted adult could be:
- A parent or carer
- A grandparent or family member
- A teacher
- A teaching assistant
- Your tutor
- A sports coach
- A youth worker
- A social worker
- Another professional who knows and supports you
At school, this could be any member of staff who makes you feel safe and listened to.
What If I Don’t Know Who to Talk To?
That’s okay.
Sometimes it can be hard to think of someone you trust. If the first person you speak to is not the right person, keep trying. There are lots of adults who want to help and support you.
You do not need to be 100% sure something is wrong before asking for help.
If something feels worrying, confusing or uncomfortable, that is enough reason to talk to someone.
Starting the Conversation
Talking can feel difficult. You do not need to explain everything perfectly.
You could try saying:
- “Can we talk? Something has been on my mind.”
- “I need some advice.”
- “Something is worrying me.”
- “I don’t really know how to explain it, but I need some help.”
- “Can I tell you something?”
Just starting the conversation is the most important step.
