Students across Mill House School recently joined more than 1,000 schools worldwide to celebrate National Poetry Day through a live online poetry event.
Hosted by children’s author and poet Michael Rosen alongside two Young Poet Laureates, the session encouraged students to explore poetry in a fun, engaging and creative way. The event included performances, discussion and opportunities for students to contribute their own ideas and interpretations.
Inspired by the theme of “Wonder”, students reflected on the things that make the world exciting, interesting and meaningful. Through discussion, brainstorming and creative writing, they explored the many different ways that wonder can be experienced, from friendship and nature to imagination and everyday moments.
A particular highlight of the event was seeing the contribution of one of our Year 7 students included in the final collaborative poem, Wonder is…. This was a proud moment for both the student and the school and demonstrated the creativity and confidence of our young writers.
At Mill House School, we believe that poetry provides a powerful opportunity for students to develop communication skills, express themselves creatively and engage with language in meaningful ways. Events such as National Poetry Day help to inspire a lifelong appreciation of reading and writing whilst building confidence and encouraging students to share their voices.
We are incredibly proud of all the students who took part and look forward to celebrating many more literary achievements throughout the year.
