Our Year 10 GCSE students recently enjoyed a fascinating visit to Birmingham’s Back to Backs, where they discovered what life was really like for families who lived and worked in these unique homes.
As they explored the cramped and crowded houses, students learned about the former residents who called the Back to Backs home. Through carefully preserved rooms and engaging stories, they gained an insight into the daily challenges, routines and experiences of people living in Birmingham during the Industrial Revolution and beyond.
The visit provided an evocative and intimate glimpse into the past, helping students to understand how social conditions, family life and working environments shaped the lives of ordinary people. Walking through the narrow courtyards and small living spaces brought history to life in a way that simply cannot be replicated in the classroom.
This was also a valuable learning opportunity for students as they prepare for their English studies in Year 11. Experiencing the sights, sounds and atmosphere of Victorian and early twentieth-century urban life will help them develop a deeper understanding of the contexts explored in many GCSE texts.
It was wonderful to see students engaging thoughtfully with the exhibits, asking insightful questions and making connections between the stories they heard and their classroom learning. The visit was both educational and memorable, and we are sure it will be an experience that stays with them as they continue their GCSE journey.
We would like to thank the staff at Birmingham’s Back to Backs for providing such an informative and inspiring day.
